Eliminating the Barrier to Testing Who Should We Test?
WHO SHOULD BE TESTED:
All patients aged 14 and over.
WHO SHOULD NOT be tested:
1. Patients who are in active periodontal therapy (SRP or Surgery).
2. Patients who recently received treatment:
-
-
- Prophylaxis—no sooner than four weeks.
- SRP—no sooner than six weeks.
- Periodontal surgery—no sooner than eight weeks.
-
4. Children—unless systemically compromised.
4. Patients taking corticosteroids or antibiotics—no sooner than six weeks post-Rx.
WHEN SHOULD WE RE-TEST PATIENTS?
Patients with a HIGH Oral Fitness Score:
- A patient with a HIGH Oral Fitness Score before treatment should be tested at each recare appointment until several acceptable scores are achieved. This score stability signifies good ongoing stability and good oral hygiene maintenance.
Patients with a LOW Oral Fitness Score:
- Healthy Patients: once per year, unless there has been a change in their medical history or a stressful life event.
- At Risk Patients: Every 3-6 months, depending upon the recare frequency and risk factors: history of periodontal disease, smoking, chronic poor oral hygiene, or an underlying medical condition (for example, diabetes).
